Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 3 2023

38% Touriga Nacional, 30% Tinta Cao, 10% Tinta Roriz, 10% Tinta Amarela, 6% Alvarelhao, 6% Sousao

Fruit was sourced from the New Territories planting of classic Portuguese grape varieties on a rocky terraced hillside. Paying homage to the classic Portuguese Vintage Ports, Yarra Yering plantings date back to 1990, embodying the forward-thinking continuance and evolution of the vineyard.

The last fruit harvested from the vineyard. Handpicked and destemmed, some varieties in a ‘field blend’ style, retaining as many whole berries as possible. The first working of the must is by foot, as in a traditional Portuguese lagar, to extract tannins from seeds and skins. After this, all handling is gentle, with careful extraction of tannins during fermentation and a final gentle pressing from skins. Maturation in old oak barrels for 10 months.

This is made from an exotic mix of Portuguese varieties that bring beautiful perfumes and delightfully presented palate qualities in a medium body. Has bright red fruits with slight ironstone and chalky characters adding complexity and layered interest. Fine firmish tannins sit comfortably within the frame supporting a very long finish. 96 Points - Ray Jordan, WinePilot.Com

"Over a long period of time Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 3 has proven itself to be a masterstroke of both concept and execution. It’s a dry red wine grown on one of the best sites in the Yarra Valley, using an assortment of Portuguese grape varieties. This year’s blend is made using of 38% Touriga Naçional, 30% Tinta Cão, 10% Tinta Roriz, 10% Tinta Amarela, 6% Alvarelhão and 6% Sousão. These are the last grapes harvested on the property each season. This wine does not see any new oak.

There’s a spark to this wine, a life. There’s also a terrific sense of structure, integrated, which gives the flavours such a solid bed to riff off. Chicory, cherry, twiggy herbs, forest berries and a slight, smoky meatiness. It’s fresh and vivid but it has a substance. It’s excellent." 95 Points - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
