Yarra Yering Dry Red No. 2 2023
98.5% Shiraz, 0.5% Marsanne, 0.5% Mataro, 0.5% Viognier
Region: Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia.
Vines: 1969 plantings of Shiraz and Marsanne, with additional Shiraz planted across the 1990’s, Mataro, Marsanne & Viognier drawn from vines planted from 1984 to 1995.
Fruit was hand-picked, transferred across a sorting table and destemmed directly to the Yarra Yering half-tonne open-fermenters. As much whole berry as possible is retained to encourage perfume. A small portion of fermenters had frozen Viognier skins; tiny yields this year, added to the bottom. The wine was aged for 15 months in French oak barriques, 30% new before blending and bottling.
"Deep ruby, bright in the glass with hints of purple at the edges. Raspberry, blueberry, cumin, rose petal and cinnamon aromas all sing out on the nose and palate. Every sip and sniff shines a light on a new corner of the spice rack that is on offer here. White pepper ebbs and flows, a hint of salumi lifts then fades all the while there’s power and density but it never sits heavily. Acidity brings life and fine boned tannins ensure structure and focus. The finish is eventually reached, demanding you return to the start again to discover something new." 98 Points - Stuart Knox, The Real Review
A blend of 99.5/.05% shiraz/viognier. Fermented with whole berries and matured in barriques (30% new). The cool vintage shows through in what's a lovely and elegant rendition of this Yarra Valley classic. Aromas of red and black fruits, spices and ironstone together with a gentle meatiness. Medium bodied and supple. An approachable and quite delicious Dry Red No. 2 that will provide copious amounts of enjoyment now and over the next 10–15 years. 97 Points -Philip Rich, Halliday Wine Companion
"The combination of bright-but-complex flavour, creamy mouthfeel, good general concentration and immaculate structure places this wine in excellent territory in a canter. That said, it has yet more going for it. This wine has an air of “Burgundian shiraz”, so to speak, in its rendition of delicacy, and combination of nuts shells and dried herbs, and in the way it almost feels water-based, even as it delivers solid flavour. This wine is drinking beautifully even now, though once the creaminess of the oak has had more time to settle in and down, it will be better again" - 95 Points - Campbell Mattinson, The Wine Front
