Yarra Yering Agincourt 2023
70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Malbec
Region: Yarra Valley, Victoria, Australia.
Vines: Cabernet Sauvignon was first planted in the Agincourt block in 1995 and blended with Malbec planted in 1990. Today, the blend evolution includes modern Cabernet clones 412 and WA Cape.
Hand harvested; the Cabernet is destemmed, berry sorted, then crushed into half-tonne open fermenters. A small amount (5%) was whole bunch fermented for extra lift and perfume. Malbec is destemmed into small fermenters and hand plunged twice daily. Maturation in French Bordeaux-shaped barrels, 10% new oak to enhance the juicy fruit palate and immediate enjoyment.

"A blend of 70/30% '95-planted cabernet/'90-planted malbec. Matured in French barriques (10% new). A medium bright crimson purple. Complex aromas of black cherry, blackcurrant, pencil shavings and potpourri spices. Good depth on the medium-bodied, finely tuned and gently crunchy palate. "In flavour terms this leans heavily on cabernet. It’s a mid-weight, fresh, leafy red wine with plum, boysenberry, leafy herbs and mint running persuasively throughout. Cedarwood oak plays a minor but positive role, and from start to finish it feels both pure-fruited and perfectly well balanced. The charm factor is high here, as is the impression that tannin, tension and the wine’s assorted tastes and textures have all been arranged just so.
