Yangarra Estate Ironheart Shiraz 2020
Ironheart is the flagship Shiraz from our single vineyard estate in Blewitt Springs at the northern edge of McLaren Vale. The vineyard’s northern aspect, higher elevation and sandy ironstone soils produce Shiraz with immense concentration and finesse. Hand-picked (21st March), 20% whole bunches, and the remainder has been destemmed, mechanical berry sorted, 30% whole berries and 50% crushed. Open fermenters and on skins for approximately 21 days. A gentle maceration principle of wetting the cap and only draining and returning when reductive. Wild yeast ferment. No pressings are used in this wine. Kept on lees for 16 months in 1 year old foudre. Bottled November 2021. Certified Organic/Biodynamic.
Elevated aromas of red to dark plum and red liquorice infused with dried clove meet up with some smoky cedar, dried meat and black pepper notes. Boasting superb refinement and polish, a cascading mix of red plum, red liquorice and blueberry fruits roll across the medium to full bodied palate. Smoky vanillin cedar, dried clove, scorched earth and peppered meat characters lend further complexity to the back half. Beautifully integrated velvet smooth tannins with a long powerful yet highly finessed finish.
Hand picked and fermented in open-tops replete with 30% whole berries, albeit, no bunches; 21 days on skins. Blackcurrant, raspberry, mint, anise and lilac. No aggressive punch downs or pump overs. This is a refined wine boasting a meander of sinewy tannins, like a songline across the palate. It doesn't play any cards not dealt, the inherent freshness derived from organic principles and impeccable fruit quality, glimpsing a southern Rhône-style, despite the variety. Drink by 2032. 95 Points Ned Goodwin – James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion
This is an open and focused red with blackberry, cloves and dried flowers. Pencil shavings, too. Some black cherry. Medium to full body, firm and balanced, fresh and bright. Peppery. Flavorful and savory. Open for this wine already. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap. 95 Points JamesSuckling.com
