Located near the village of Blagny, this Premier Cru vineyard holds the distinction of being the highest within the Puligny appellation. Sitting at an elevation of 360-380 meters, it could arguably claim the title of the highest Premier Cru vineyard in the Côte de Beaune, although a few sites in Saint-Aubin might contest this claim. While in the past, this location was considered one of the coolest on the Côte d’Or, the wines produced from here today exhibit a fuller and more intense character. Nevertheless, they consistently reflect the producer's commitment to purity and a revitalizing structure. The winemaking process follows the classic Guffens style, where only the first press juices are used, undergoing fermentation in barrels with 20 to 30% new oak, depending on the nuances of the vintage.

The 2015 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Sous Le Puits, which comes from Blagny at a high elevation, was matured in 25% new oak with regular bâtonnage. It has a forward, generous and quite creamy bouquet that just needs to develop greater mineral expression, more tension. The palate is well balanced and smooth on the entry, a little puppy fat here, whilst the finish needs time to absorb the oak. Give this a year in bottle. Neal Martin
