Symons Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir 2024
After 15 years at Petaluma, 14 at Stonier and 3 at Tuscan winery Antinori, Mike Symons established his own eponymous label on the Mornington Peninsula in ’23. His small yet focused range comprises 3 wines – a regional pinot noir, regional chardonnay, and the jewel in the crown, the single-vineyard Georgica Pinot Noir – made with a hands-off approach and a restrained use of oak to let fruit and site shine.
This wine is a few steps above the ordinary. It’s unusually complex, and beautifully fruited, and deep, and lively, and more-ish; all at once. It could hardly be more impressive. It tastes of undergrowth, walnuts, red and black cherries, smoked cedar, autumn leaves and red roses, and it cascades these flavours through the palate in a manner that feels ultra confident, and ultra engaging. Tannin through the finish is ultra fine, and just assertive enough, and the length there too has real endurance. This and all the current release wines from Symons have made be an instant devotee. 95 Points - Campbell Mattinson
