Symons Mornington Peninsula Chardonnay 2024
After 15 years at Petaluma, 14 at Stonier and 3 at Tuscan winery Antinori, Mike Symons established his own eponymous label on the Mornington Peninsula in ’23. His small yet focused range comprises 3 wines – a regional pinot noir, regional chardonnay, and the jewel in the crown, the single-vineyard Georgica Pinot Noir – made with a hands-off approach and a restrained use of oak to let fruit and site shine.
His Chardonnay comes from older vines, blending two vineyards found in the area of Merricks. They give a small crop of just over 4 tonne/ha, which is about 30% lower than average. The grapes are hand-picked and whole bunch pressed to two 3-year-old puncheons for fermentation and maturation with no malolactic fermentation.
Champion chardonnay. Flavoursome, svelte, creamy and complex, with all the bells and whistles and some X-factor on top. It tastes of peaches and citrus, grapefruit and flint, almonds, meal and cream, and at every step it comes across as both impressive and delicious. The quality of this wine is right up there. It’s exceptionally well priced, too. Symons has announced itself this year as a seriously high class producer. 95 points - Campbell Mattinson
