Shaw & Smith Lenswood Pinot Noir 2024

Pinot Noir from the Lenswood vineyard at 455 – 500m elevation. Undulating with east and west facing aspects, the soils are brown loams over clay with broken shale on the ridges. Planted in 1999. Hand-picked and hand sorted, then long slow ferments in wood and stainless steel vats, followed by 10 months in 500 litre puncheons, 30% new.

Magic moments with Pinot Noir. Svelte and silky texture, lots of red fruit, sweet and peppery spice, alpine herbs in perfume. The palate more of the raspberry, red cherry of the bouquet, but with touches of charcuterie, white mushroom, dried seaweed, sweet spice and a light dusting of pepper. Tannins are succulent and refreshing, too, and of high quality. Elegance personified. 95 Points - Mike Bennie, Halliday Wine Companion

Deep red with a tint of purple and a rich bouquet of smoky charcuterie and meat stock, a suggestion of reduction, and darker fruits. The wine is elegant on the tongue, with firm, focused tannins and good balance. Rich, concentrated and fleshy, with ample tannins and superior extract. Long finish and the structure suggests it will work best with protein-rich food. There are touches of whole-bunch and oak but it's all delivered in a balanced and impressive package. 95 Points - Huon Hooke, The Real Review
This is a perfectly polished Pinot Noir with cherry-plum, beetroot, crushed red rose and cedarwood flavours running through a fleshy and dark (in varietal terms) palate. It’s a fresh, lively wine but there’s good depth here – and the complexity to go with it. Tannin is both silken and assertive at once, and it finishes with a satisfying run of cedar, sweet spice and cherry-berry flavour. Some extra time for the oak to nestle further into the fruit will do this wine a world of good. 93+ Points - Campbell Mattinson, Campbellmattinson.com
