Sailor Seeks Horse Dijon Clone Pinot Noir 2023
A Blend of 777, 115, 114 & Abel Clones. Cropped at 1.7t/Ha.
Wild ferments, gently plunged twice daily, then left on skins post ferment until the tannins aligned and pressed straight to barrel. All destemmed, 42% new oak, mix of barriques, hogsheads and puncheons. 12 months in oak, 3 months in tank pre-bottling. Sulphured mid-summer. Unfined
This has wrangled its way into the top handful of Australian Pinot bottlings we get to see each year. Evocative, dark baking and wood spice notes intermingle with black cherry, cassis jelly crystals and red florals, so beautifully perfumed and poised. It's a remarkable nose that reminisces of all the beautiful things you see from Burgundy - sweet fruit and black tea. There's so much to enjoy just nosing this wine and all of that gratification is carried on the palate - its supremely textured, elegant and pure with a lovely vibrant energy. Nothing forced and admittedly in a slightly more generous and open knit fashion than the routine SSH bottling. The finish is supple with a lovely brisk freshness that carries and lingers in a beautiful fanning nature. Proper Pinot!
The 2024 Dijon Clones Pinot Noir is delicate and floral, detailed and fine, with a long spool of mineral flavor and texture through the middle palate and finish. This is savory, leaning more into pomegranate molasses, new leather, cocoa, etc. alongside the rose petals and shaved fennel/licorice to close. The fruit here is all destemmed, and the tannins feel sleek rather than spicy.
