Dark fruit, kind of deep and brooding with a liquorice richness, though also quite spicy and potpourri perfume is strong feature of the wine. It’s medium-bodied, has a ferrous quality and inky depth, some orange peel and amaro flavours in with well-seasoned five spice duck (I know, I know), plenty of blue fruit and fragrance carries on a silty tannin finish of excellent length and freshness. This is the second release of the Wendouree-inspired blend (60/40% shiraz/mataro) from the Springs Hill vineyard. This year though, Skye Salter and Charlie Seppelt own that vaunted Blewitt Springs site. And what a wine it is – one I just want to nose, drawing in its aromatic spray of violets, lavender, black spices, dried mint, blueberry, Earl Grey tea, tart boysenberry, cracked pepper, tar and iodine. It’s just as good on the palate, settling in at mid-weight, but so expansively, such is the à point balance of palate perfume, fruit weight, finely inscribed tannins and keen freshness.
