Oria Riff Old Vine Grenache Dry Red 2024
From the famed farmer of grapes Fiona Wood, off Blewitt Springs soil (almost in the sub-region), in a single location, planted 1960s. Two picks bring a bit of salt and pepper to the wine, it sees quite a bit of whole bunches retained in the natural ferment.
Tannin quality is off charts here. Succulent, fine and lacy, like licking a spider web. It’s huge in perfume, red cherry, sour and pickled, a fog of rose petal, dried and fresh, some garam masala spice, a sniff of char and tree bark. It’s frisky to taste, fresh in its fruit, spicy in its spice, earthy and savoury elements lock in. A riff of that pleasingly bitter, amaro-like tree bark character chimes in through the finish. It defies it’s heady numbers, positing a fresh and near crunchy red of vitality and brightness, yet laden with burr and puff of savouriness.
