Olek Bondonio Langhe Nebbiolo 2024
Olek Bondonio has become one of the most sought after names in Barbaresco. He grew up in the family’s farmhouse, ‘La Berchialla’, which sits amongst Barbaresco’s most famous crus and has been in his family for 200 years. He used to visit the farmhouse each summer, studying the vineyard workers with intent. A seed was sown and after conquering Italy as a professional snowboarder, he turned his mind to wine, working in the Langhe and also abroad before returning home to look after the family’s vineyards.
“Sourced from Serragrilli (Neive) and Roddino (500 metres above sea level). Owing to the challenging nature of the vintage for wines destined for long ageing, the blend also includes a portion of declassified Barbaresco from Starderi and Roncagliette.”
This is a light wine, almost delicate you could say. Cherry, tart strawberry, lovely floral perfume, some almond and liquorice, with a fair amount of spice. Red fruit and almond, a gently sappy quality, fine dusty tannin grip, perhaps a little orange peel in the mix, especially on its long bright spicy finish. Shows the cool vintage for sure and presents as a fine-boned ‘classic’ style. So engaging. I love it. 94 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
