Michael Hall Flaxmans Valley Syrah 2023
The Naimanya vineyard sits high in the Eden Valley at 520 meters altitude, on the south-west fringe of the tiny sub-region known as Flaxman’s Valley. The soils are sandy loam, gravel and quartz over clay. Its altitude and soil structure allow a long, slow ripening season typically generating marked spice and floral characters.
Late budburst, flowering and a cool autumn combined for a very late vintage. Handpicked 27 April 2023, 95% destemmed, 5% whole bunch. Pressed to French oak (33% new), matured 14 months.
1200 bottles produced.
Coming from the coolest site in the Eden Valley, this Syrah has a certain lightness and lift of red fruit. It’s the perfume of red cherry and raspberry, red fig sweetness, and there’s a violet note too. The texture is silky with slate-like tannins and a pink peppercorn mouth aroma in the finish. Very beautiful and lifted wine. I think it has plenty of charm, and with time, it will become even more harmonious. 94+ Points - Kasia Sobesiak, The Wine Front
