We established Black Springs vineyard on a friends property at 450 metres on decomposed granite from 2016. Planted to both Chardonnay and Nebbiolo, it’s proving an exceptional site. 2023 is the first vintage kept separate as the maturity of the block has developed (Chardonnay is also Black Springs just forgot to put it on the label).

Crushed, destemmed, fermented without inoculation in concrete fermenters before being raised in ceramic eggs. Without the interference of oak you see both the purity of fruit and the plush unadorned tannin framework. Intense, silky and harmonious. It has many years ahead of it. Simon Grant – Winemaker

 

These were a standout in a recent Nebbiolo benchmarking – there’s a thread of this lovely lignified wood character aromatically, morello cherries, orange rind, amaro-esque, graphite and fresh leather. Seriously complex, this oscillates between swathes of sweet dark cherries and more savoury graphite notes, black tea and baking spice – seamless and so well put together, Simon et al have managed this vintage extremely well, it’s incredibly well balanced, exceptionally managed tannin and just a complete package in a difficult year.
