Loosen Barry Wolta Wolta Riesling 2020

The grapes for this wine are grown in an area of the Clare Valley known as Wolta Wolta, an Aboriginal word meaning ‘good water’. From Block 18 planted in 1979 at the Barry family’s Lodge Hill vineyard. Sitting at an altitude of 480m above sea level the vines lie on brown loams over a layer of clay and slate bedrock roughly 900 million years old that has cracked off vertically allowing free drainage.

The 2020 was harvested on 26th of February 2020, hand harvested and sorted. Fruit is chilled overnight in a cool room to bring temperature below 10 degrees, once cold it is then destemmed and crushed prior to pressing into stainless steel. This pressed juice then settles for 12 hours before being racked into the 3,000L German Oak Foudre Cask, the light lees were racked which assists the wild fermentation occurring after 5 days. Fermentation was maintained at 18 degrees and took 4 weeks. When residual sugar was below 10g/L cooling was turned on to arrest the fermentation at 5g/L. The wine then rested on full yeast lees for 18 months at 10 degrees before being transferred to stainless steel where it sat on fine lees at 1 degree for a further 1 month.
