Laurent Chardigny Bourgogne Pinot Noir 2024

Sitting at an altitude of 400m on limestone and clay soils, on east to south facing slopes overlooking the village of Azê in the heart of the Maconnais, Domaine de Rochebin was established in 1921 by the Marillier family. They initially planted mixed crops and fruits, but by the early 1970's the family had realised that the full potential of their land was best expressed through viticulture and winemaking, and this became their sole focus.

Today, Mickaël Marillier runs the estate, with winemaker Laurent Chardigny guiding all viticulture and winemaking. Laurent joined the estate in 2008, and immediately began implementing sustainability practices across all areas of the estate, vineyards and winery. Through natural, integrated pest management, the use of pesticides has been eliminated, and the implementation of vineyard cover crops and grasses has rejuvenated soils.

Under Laurent's own label, fruit from Rochebin estate vineyards is treated with the lightest of touches and, unlike the Rochebin wines, does not meet any oak during the winemaking process. The resulting wines are very fresh, elegant, pure expressions of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Gamay.

First and foremost, this is Burgundy without the bells and whistles – Pinot Noir from the Macon on a mixture of clay and limestone at 400m above sea level, exclusively raised in stainless steel in a bid to present pristine fruit purity.

Quite a translucent nose of rose hip, brambles, morello cherry and a lovely little savoury, wood like component, almost an old school Beaujolais lead pencil note. Lovely pitched fruit, mid weight in shape and texture, cranberry, pomegranate and blackcurrant jelly crystals, fanning in texture with very tense, fine graind tannin providing a long brooding Campari-esque finish. Excellent value, super appealing and attractive Pinot Noir!
