Jim Barry Lodge Hill Shiraz 2017
A pastoral run dating back to 1839, and originally named Wolta Wolta, the 329 acre Lodge Hill Vineyard is situated on the Eastern Ranges, five kilometres east of the Clare township. Jim Barry purchased the land for The Lodge Hill Vineyard in 1977 as he was sure it would “produce some of the best Riesling in the Clare Valley.” However in 1979, Jim Barry planted his first Shiraz in this location, and it has gone on to produce our award winning Lodge Hill Shiraz.
The Shiraz vineyard occupies the north side of the ridge at 514 metres above sea level, and are exposed to longer and warmer bursts of sunlight. It is characterised by 40 to 50 centremeters of chocolatey loam topsoil over grey siltstone. The weathered siltstone and clay with some thin calcareous siltstone makes it the ideal environment for low-yielding Shiraz vines.
