Limited. The ancient bush vines of this eight acre, Great Western vineyard date back to at least 1890 and are incredibly low yielding (less than one tonne per acre). Gary tells us that the site was as good as mothballed when he approached the owner in 2005. Vineyard restoration began in 2006, and this wine has grown in leaps and bounds with each vintage. The Syrah vines are 'Old Best's' clone, on their own roots, while the soil is clay over deep, hard ironstone with buckshot and quartz. A run of severe frosts have limited this 2015 release to the contents of a single, 400-litre barrel so don’t muck around. Mills says, “One of the rarer, perfumed and finessed years for Garden Gully. Very tightly wound tannin that will take a few years to come around. Low alcohol and pure graphite this year - with slight briny tones, not something we see a lot of from this vineyard which is normally salty, earthy and meaty to the max.”
