Situated on the Beechworth Gorge, the relatively steep site had been planted in the 1860s, with the only remnants of that occupation the durable dry-stone walls and ruin of a winery.
“I’m glad to finally be taking a crack at this wine. It was sent to me nearly a year ago but following a mishap with the bottle (as in, it was dropped) I never got the chance to review it, or at least not until now. The extra time in bottle probably hasn’t hurt it.
It’s grown on an incredible little vineyard in the heart of Beechworth. It includes 2% viognier. It’s a beautiful expression of Beechworth and of shiraz. It’s peppery and floral and nutty, its woodsy spice characters running like Kelpies around the beating herd of mineral, woodsmoke and deep black cherry. We want sweetness and we get it, but we get it in a flurry of roasted peppers, in a dry, tannic context, and with mineral notes as stitching. I like the stern seriousness of this wine.
