Elderton Neil Ashmead Grand Tourer Shiraz 2022
Rich aromas of blackberries, dark cherries, and plums, complemented by notes of dark chocolate, liquorice, and spice. The palate is bold yet refined, with fine-grained tannins and a long, layered finish. Oak aging imparts hints of vanilla and cedar.
The late Neil Ashmead was a sports car nut, and I've always liked this wine for its purity and the gear stick imprinted on the capsule. Estate-grown fruit, 82/18% Greenock/Nuriootpa, matured 14 months in French oak puncheons. Satsuma plum, dark cherry and macerated berry fruits with hints of baking spices, earth, violets, roasting meats, olive tapenade, espresso and dark chocolate. Full bodied yet energetic and vital with deep, pure fruit, a tight, fine tannin frame and a regional thumbprint that is long and true. Drink by 2033. 94 Points
