Borgogno Classico Barolo 2019

A great vintage for Barolo, and if you want ‘classic’ Barolo, then this is it. Best since 2016. These wines don’t seem to get the acclaim that I’d expect from most international critics, and I’m kind of at a loss to work out why? Still, in this country at least, I’m Il Re di Barolo, so there is that! This if from Cannubi, Cannubi San Lorenzo, Fossati, Liste and San Pietro delle Viole. Importer: Mondo Imports Strawberry, red cherry, spearmint, camphor and liquorice root, dried roses, a little baking spice and orange rind. It’s medium to full-bodied, svelte and fresh, red fruits and mint, a little orange peel, but such fragrance and energy, with dry but supple emery board and tea leaf tannin, a juicy flavour, yet tight and controlled, really quite ‘mineral’ and the finish is gently dusty and long, with so much perfume, spiced biscuit and quiet ferrous grip.
