Bodegas Alonso Velo Flor Manzanilla 750ml
Like Fino Sherry, Manzanilla is quite dry and made of Palomino grapes, but this wine is produced in Sanlucar de Barrameda right next to the Gulf of Cadiz instead of farther inland. Manzanilla is generally salty and a bit nutty, and Velo Flor has some of that, but ten years under a thick layer of yeast adds deep color and a sea-brine nose, followed by baked apple, oyster shell, and Marcona almonds. The final wine is unfiltered and incredibly complex with no added sulphites and bottled in a funky Clavelin bottle (620ml) with handmade labels.
