A classic Australian blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, the 51st release is as meaningful now as it was in 1966 when we released the inaugural 1962 vintage."

Yalumba's capacity to tell stories is arguably more unique than any other family in Australian wine. The Signature is the absolute symbolism of these stories. Pre 1962 - it was the Yalumba Special Reserve Stock Galway Vintage Claret, made and blended by Rudi Kronberger and from that 1962 bottling onwards, is adorned with a specialised 'Signature', as a tribute to historic individuals that had served time with the family.

1970 saw the updated naming to carry the terminology 'The Signature' preceding the classification of regionality and cepage - the earliest bottlings had fruit from Mclaren Vale and Eden Valley, but from 1964 onwards Cabernet and Shiraz from Barossa Valley have taken centre stage, routinely a blend based on vintage conditions and in the odd year a straight bottling of one variety.

The naming of the Signature is one of incredibly special significance - each year, The Signature honours an individual who has made a profound contribution to Yalumba’s culture and traditions. Personally chosen by fifth-generation proprietor Robert Hill-Smith and announced at the annual staff Christmas lunch on the lawns of Yalumba, the Signatory becomes part of a lineage etched into the fabric of the winery.

The 2023 Signatory is dedicated to Peter Sawrey - who for 33 years has been the voice behind the Signatories. Since 1994, he has written the back label story for every vintage of The Signature; interviewing each Signatory, distilling their character and contribution, and translating Yalumba’s history into the words that travel with every bottle around the world. His storytelling has become as intrinsic to The Signature as the blend itself.

The 2023 is a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvignon and 45% Shiraz from the Barossa Valley from an average of 23 year old vines on a misture of sandy clay loams, rich red dirt over limeston and hard cracking biscay clays. Fermented wild, 9 days on skins, prior to pressing and 19 months maturation in a mixture of French and Hungarian hogsheads and barriques of which 22% was new.

We looked at this at the launch this week and without hyperbole this is the best young Signature we've seen. My notes read as such -

"Beautifully fragrant nose - polished leather, rosehip, cassis, blood plum and a whole swathe of Asian baking spice. You'd be remiss to think you're in the left bank of Bordeaux, Pessac-esque with that little top note of red fruit - this is as good as Aussie Claret gets. Pure, elegant and polished, easily one of the great 'Signatures'. Its so vibrant, full of energy, incredibly poised and with an eternity on its side. There is light and shade here, and the shape and flow of this is so thoughtfully put together, harmonic - top notch Claret, and one to load up on!!"

This is a particularly good example of why cabernet and shiraz go so well together. Apart from structure and flesh, the combination of dark and red berry flavours, fruit sweetness and leafy herb notes, are just so complementary. This wine is the perfect exhibit: the fruit is fresh and flavoursome at once, not to mention of noteworthy purity. There’s cedarwood oak here too, but its integration is entire, and it has latched on to nuances of tobacco. Yalumba’s Signature pretty much never misses, and this release certainly hasn’t. Fruit, tannin, length and all-round harmony; all are in top nick. 95 Points - Campbell Mattinson

We might be yet to learn who is to be honoured with the 2023 Signature, but whomsoever it is should be well pleased. This is a cracking release, one of their best. An opaque centre with a dark maroon rim, there is still vanillin oak evident on the nose, but it is integrating well. The aromas include notes of dried herbs, black fruits, graphite, licorice, mocha, chocolate, plums and cassis. This is balanced, youthful, offering real persistence and coiled power. The palate sees the move to gorgeous chocolate notes. A wine with serious length, there is much to love here. 96 Points - Ken Gargett, Wine Pilot
