Dappled Sur La Crete Single Vineyard Mornington Peninsula Pinot Noir 2023
'Sur le Crete' means on the ridge. Single vineyard Pinot noir grown @ 179m above sea level in the rich red volcanic soils or Red Hill on the Mornington Peninsula. Wild fermented, 30% whole bunch, minimal SO2 added with no other additions. Bottled unfined and unfiltered. Tremendously low crops resulted in great depth of colour again. The aromatic profile is classic Mornington with rich plum/ripe strawberry fruits mixed with spice and complex mulchy undergrowth aromas.
'Shaun Crinion, who apparently hates the limelight (unlike me, as I live for it), is maybe the ultimate cult producer that’s not a cult producer, that is actually a cult producer. His wines sell out in a jiffy, and yet, he’s kind enough to send them in for review anyway. Speaks volumes to me. He seems modest to the nth degree. This is from Main Ridge, with 30% whole bunch. Hi SHAUN, I hope everyone comments on this wine to make him blush that little bit more.
Lots of exotic spice here, and in particular cardamom pods, a little roast red capsicum, pencils, cherry, roasted beets, dried herbs, and some jamon and grilled meat. It’s medium-bodied, quite sappy, again all the ground spice, a distinct blood orange and amaro twang, with a lively and sandy tannin finish of good length. Lots of energy to this wine, albeit kind of bitter, though I like that. Strawberry and zesty tang closes it out.' 94 Points - Gary Walsh, The Wine Front
